Drake Music Scotland

In recent years Trefoil has awarded Drake Music Scotland organisational grants used to facilitate specialist music tuition for young people with additional support needs.

Drake Music Scotland creates opportunities for participants to learn how to play instruments that make music fully accessible, increase participation in music making at all levels and build an integrated musical culture where disabled and non-disabled musicians work together as equals.

Students can learn to play a variety of instruments including piano, drums and guitar with the assistance of software such as FigureNotes.

Young musicians supported by Drake Music Scotland are also taught how to make music on iPads allowing the students to get creative and enjoy making music.

Now that Greta has direct control onto the surface of the iPad we can really start to move the musical development forward for her. Many previous apps have been too rudimentary for her to get a satisfying musical outcome, but Thumbjam is a proper instrument for her to create and layer harmonies. We have also introduced her to Soundtrap as this is accessible for her on the iPad to cut and edit her Thumbjam tracks into structured pieces. Working with Greta on her Arts Award has brought in a new dimension as she has been asked to think about her creative work in a different way, developing her critical thinking skills in the creative context.

Trefoil are delighted to hear that the funding awarded has contributed towards building the confidence of these young musicians and the development of their music skills.
