A Once in a Lifetime Adventure at Sea!
The Excelsior Trust is a Lowestoft-based charity which received a £2,500 organisational grant from Trefoil in May 2024. This grant went towards the Excelsior Trust’s project to take young people with additional support needs from Kirkcaldy High School in Fife on a once in a lifetime sailing expedition from Dunbar to Orkney.
The Excelsior Trust operates a sail training vessel, the Excelsior, for young people to learn a life changing set of skills. Sailing is an extremely challenging sport but one which allows young people to push themselves and experience a great sense of achievement.
The young people who took part in the expedition reported that they saw themselves in a different light after taking part; that they felt more capable and able to deal with future challenges they may face.
Each of the participants took time to write essays while on board the Excelsior about how the trip positively impacted them. When back ashore, the young people gave presentations at their school in front of teachers – an excellent achievement demonstrating the benefits of the trip.
